Wiltshire Council's 'Substantive Highway Scheme' funds road safety projects which are too big or expensive for the Area Boards to pay for.

This year an extra £100,000 has been allocated to the Substantive Highway Scheme budget by the government,

Five schemes, including the zebra crossing in Holt, have already been awarded funding from the SHS. The extra £100,000 will be used to fund the next highest scoring bid which was that for a puffin crossing on the A30 at Ludwell (Charlton) in the parish of Donhead St. Mary.

The cost of the Puffin is £80,000.

The South West Area Board has confirmed a contribution of £10,000. The remaining £30,000 will be kept as a contingency for this and the five other schemes which are in the process of being implemented. Should any of this money not be used it will be added to the Council's Integrated Transport funding.
