"Better local services"

20 Mar 2006

"Opposition Conservative councillors' complaints against Lib Dem efficiency and genuine efforts to make life better for local people smacks of sour grapes.

Our management of the council has produced better local services and the lowest council tax increase in Wiltshire for the eleventh year running. I am proud of that performance.

As for Tory dire predictions of huge local tax rises to come, they are here right now as Conservative controlled Wiltshire County Council's budget deficits soar and so does the county part of our local council tax.

Under my leadership the Lib Dems on North Wiltshire District Council will continue to focus on providing value for money and boosting core services.

Our priorities remain improving the environment through more recycling and better waste management, creating low cost housing for local families with more efficient processing of housing benefit, and working in partnership with others to generate improved community safety and better facilities for our young people and rural communities.

These priorities also reflect the wishes of local communities as our extensive consultations with parish and town councils and community partnerships show. Of course there is plenty of room for further improvement.

We will work enthusiastically with all those wanting to build a better north Wiltshire and while doing so will ensure we manage council finances effectively to get good value for hard pressed local council tax payers."

Cllr Carol O'Gorman.

Liberal Democrat Leader.

North Wiltshire District Council.
