Council Tax Shock! As Conservatives Force Poor To Pay More

6 Dec 2012

Plans by Conservative Wiltshire Council could see thousands of the poorest people in Wiltshire bearing the brunt of government changes to council tax benefits Changes being introduced by the coalition government will see a reduction of £3.5m in the total council tax benefits paid to Wiltshire Council.

Conservatives in Trowbridge have decided to charge the bulk of the savings on those living in band A and B properties.

The Conservative one-size-fits-all policy will mean that some of the poorest households in Wiltshire will now need to start finding hundreds of pounds extra to pay the increase in their bills.

Liberal Demcrats called on the administration to instead implement a fairer system which would have seen those with more contribute more, and protect those with little.

Liberal Democrat group leader Jon Hubbard commented, "This is typical of this Conservative administration in Wiltshire. They have chosen to adopt a formula that sees the poorest in our sociecty hit hardest.

Our alternative would have halfed the bills for those hardest hit by these changes."
