Demolition of the Oak Inn, Westbury

8 Nov 2012

One of Westbury's most historic buildings has been demolished to make way for a supermarket. If you want to see a medieval timber frame being pulled apart by a wrecking machine it's been recorded for posterity as a ten-minute film on youtube:

The building was not listed so the demolition was perfectly legal, though campaigners believe the true age of the structure was not understood until recently, and have pointed out that a sensible compromise would have been for the developers to have allowed a detailed record to be kept of the roof structure before its undignified destruction.
