Election address
This will go down in history as the Brexit election.
Theresa May has promised 'Strong and Stable Government in the National Interest'.
Beware of strong governments. Better to have a powerful and enfranchised citizenry. Our current electoral system acts against that.
Look around you - what you see is not stability. A badly managed referendum, a quick change of Prime Minister, promises of no snap election then a snap election.
This election is not in the national interest. It's being held, successfully it has to be said, in the interest of the Tory party. But It's not in the national interest to have a single party state, and the next 2 or 3 or 4 years will not be stable. They will be certainly unpredictable, probably chaotic, possible traumatic.
Nor is it in the national interest to see the NHS suffering from Tory cuts, the Police Force shrinking and therefore crime increasing, schools having to cut teaching staff and therefore children's education suffering, local government being forced to cut services whilst increasing council tax.
If the outcome of the election seems inevitable, both nationally and locally, then I appeal to those of you who don't follow the crowd.
We may be a minority, but this constituency, this county, this country, needs a strong and well-founded opposition.
While Labour have been failing the Liberal Democrats have been rebuilding.
Over the last couple of years we've seen the disastrous result of the 2015 general election, and a UKIP victory in the referendum.
However the struggle goes on. In South West Wiltshire I'm still standing, UKIP are not.
I ask for your support to keep us as an open, tolerant and united nation.
