Fury at Conservative's Pay Rise for Council Boss

14 May 2011

Wiltshire Liberal Democrat Leader Jon Hubbard has reacted with fury to news that the Conservative Administration in County Hall have given a pay rise to the council's chief executive, and have also been paying his rent!

Speaking after the story was broken in the Wiltshire Times, Jon Hubbard said:

"I do not believe it is normally appropriate to discuss the remuneration of individuals within the Council, but I cannot consolidate paying a highly paid staff member's rent whilst at the same time making other staff at the council redundant and asking other staff to change their terms and conditions.

"But let's be clear about something here. Whilst we can criticise Mr Kerr for claiming these subsidies, we should be looking to the Conservative administration who are running the Council to explain why they not only employed the Chief Executive on such a bloated salary but also why they agreed to pay his rent.

"The Conservative Administration on Wiltshire Council harp on about the importance of providing value for money for Wiltshire residents. How is it value for money paying senior officers rent when the officer in question is being paid ten times that of some workers in our county?"

"I find it inconceivable that the Conservatives Administration are making staff redundant and asking staff to accept reductions in pay and working conditions and yet it feels it is appropriate to award the Chief Executive with a pay rise on top of his already bloated salary, and alongside scandalous expense claims".
