Green bins and Canal Road - Rubbish questions and answers

21 Sep 2015

The council has responded to queries about green bins and recycling centres as follows:

...............................................

Q. What's being done with the 240 litre green bins currently being 'retrieved' in West Wiltshire?

A. All 180 litre bins that are still serviceable will go back into service, with any having reached the end of their useful life being recycled. With 240 litre bins in the west the size and the green body combine to limit future use. As our policy is to issue 180l bins for garden waste these won't be given to other residents. Depending on the condition of the bin (most of which are now over 15 years old) we will either remove spare parts to repair the bins of other residents, or the entire bin will be recycled.

Q. Is the council aware of the congestion being created at the Canal Road HRC in Trowbridge, both within and outside of the site, since the days and hours of operation were cut?

A. We are aware of that some residents have had to queue before entering our household recycling centres since changes to operating hours were introduced from 13 July. We are continuing to monitor the situation at all sites and are discussing with Hills, the operators of the sites, where improvements to site layouts and container locations may help. Additional staff have been brought in during the busiest periods (Saturday, Sunday, Mondays) to assist with traffic management on the busiest sites. Our expectation is that queues will start to reduce as the busier summer period comes to an end and site users get used to the new operating hours. Nevertheless, usage figures will be kept under regular review to inform possible future improvements.
