Hidden Fire bill increase

21 Feb 2016

Wiltshire residents will suffer a big increase in the amount they pay for the Fire and Rescue Service this year, because of the merger between Dorset and Wiltshire brigades.

Here's how it works. (All figures for a Band D property)

Last year we paid £64.88 whilst Dorset paid £67.86.

This year there will be one rate for the two counties. Any increase is capped at 2%. But you need a single figure to add 2% to, so the higher Dorset figure is the one being used.

So the new rate is £69.21.

For us that's an increase of 15% - way above what would normally be permitted by government.

However, when you get your bill you'll be told the increase is 1.99%, with the pretend figure being used as a baseline.

WC hopes you won't notice this little scam.
