Lib Dem proposal for more LED street lighting rejected
Today the Liberal Democrats advocated for the adoption of an amendment to Wiltshire Council's budget to allow for a greater move to LED street lighting across the county.
Unfortunately, the Lib Dem amendment was not adopted by Wiltshire's ruling Conservatives, who chose to ignore the benefits that increasing the adoption of LED lighting would bring to the county. The Lib Dems supported funding an extra £1m to be more proactive in our approach to rolling out LED street lighting in Wiltshire. Cllr Steve Oldrieve, who drafted the Lib Dem amendment commented that, 'the Lib Dem amendment is a win-win proposal allowing significant revenue savings whilst reducing our carbon footprint. It is unbelievable that Wiltshire Council's Conservative administration have rejected it and shows a lack of leadership in the fight against global warming."
Lib Dem leader on Wiltshire Council, Cllr Ian Thorn said, "this is something Wiltshire should be pushing forward with. LED lighting both caused lower levels of light pollution and has significantly lower running costs than conventional lighting, and as a Council we should be leading from the front in the fight against global warming"
