Lib Dems welcome news of “Common Sense” decisions over Tesco Developments in Wiltshire

Following news of Tesco's challenging financial situation it has been revealed that they have stopped the proposed development in Royal Wotton Bassett but still intend to develop a new store in Calne, although no dates have yet been given indicating when this will happen.

Wiltshire's Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that local residents views have been considered and that Royal Wootton Bassett's historic town centre will now be protected but are calling for the land to be offered to another group that could contribute to the Towns infrastructure and not let it be held in a Tesco Land Bank.

Royal Wootton Bassett Councillor Chris Hurst commented "I welcome the announcement and it will also be a great relief to many of the independent shopkeepers in the town. The High Street is the centre of the Wootton Bassett community and it is vital that it is protected."

Chris was supported by prospective MP Dr Brian Matthew who added "I am delighted to hear that the Royal Wooton Bassett site is not going ahead as our survey showed residents were opposed to the development by a factor of 2:1."

Meanwhile in Calne local councillor Glenis Ansell has welcomed the news that the more appropriate development for the town by Tesco has been confirmed. "I am delighted that Tesco thinks Calne is an area for growth and look forward to the job opportunities that this development will bring to Calne" said the local Lib Dem councillor.

Prospective MP Dr Brian Matthew added "I am pleased that the Calne development will continue as the town has been waiting for this for some time. I encourage Tesco to confirm when this important infrastructure and jobs asset will be coming to Calne."

Leader of the Lib Dem Group on Wiltshire Council Cllr Jon Hubbard commented, "I'm delighted that Tesco's have clearly listened to local residents. This shows the importance of the hard work Liberal Democrats councillors and campaigners undertake with their regular residents surveys, making sure that local people's voice is heard."
