Local people heard on Hilperton Gap

Local people took their concerns over the proposed speed limits of the new Hilperton Gap road to County Hall this morning with 150 residents attending the council meeting to speak on the issue.

Councillors heard from three speakers but residents were the shocked to be told by the Conservative run council that no further speakers would be permitted. Wiltshire Liberal Democrats objected strongly to this ruling and called for all members of the public to be heard. Initially rejected this was then put to a vote of the council following a technical motion for the suspension of standing orders by Lib Dem leader Jon Hubbard.

Cllr Steve Oldrieve the Liberal Democrat councillor for Trowbridge Paxcroft spoke of the importance of the issue and the strength of feeling among all those who attended and those who couldn't because of work commitments.

Cllr Jon Hubbard, Leader of the Wiltshire Liberal Democrats, added "It is important that all people are heard and that the administration listen to the people they represent. It was particularly dissapointing to see some local conservatives voting not to hear the voice of the people they claim to represent".

Local Liberal Democrats will continue to stand up for and work with local people and to make sure the administration is forced to listen to residents and take their views are reflected in the decision making process.
