Pizza and a packed afternoon of activities are set to launch the new way of providing activities for young people in the Westbury area.
The free fun event at Leigh Park Community Centre on Sunday 8 February provides opportunities to find out more about the activities on offer - and to get ideas from young people about what else they would like.
Young people will be able to sample sessions in a range of activities. There will be a chance to find out about sports on offer as well as having a say in what sorts of activities might be available in the future.
The start-up event will also launch the community's local youth network (LYN) marking the new way of working for youth activities. Last year Wiltshire Council committed to providing severely reduced funds for activities for young people - previously such activities were based around the youth centres.
Community youth officers Phoebe Brazier and Amy Schuring are heading up the new ways of working in the Westbury area along with the area board, representatives from local young people and other community groups including the police. Phoebe and Amy have been working to get the opinions of young people, such as meeting with the school council and speaking in Matravers school assembly. They are hoping the special open event will attract as many young people as possible and help launch ideas and opportunities.
One of the young people involved in the planning of the February launch is Leah Tugwell. "This is going to be a really fun event and hopefully we will get to try a whole range of activities. It's also the chance for us all to say what we would really like to see in Westbury," she said.
The event starts at 2pm and runs until 5pm. Everyone from 13 to 19 is welcome and there will be free pizza and drinks.
