Mead Westbury site approved

An outline application from Gloucester Land Company Ltd for a housing development at The Mead, Westbury, went to the Strategic Planning Committee of Wiltshire Council on Wednesday March 12th 2014. The scheme was approved, subject to a legal agreement and a total of 30 conditions.
The site is outside the settlement limits of Westbury and would not have been permitted under the old District Plan. However the rejection of Wiltshire Council's Core Strategy by a government inspector meant that at the time the council was in a weak position when it came to resisting such developments.
Access to the site will be via a new junction off The Mead.
The development will be for up to 220 homes of a range of types and sizes including affordable homes, together with open space, play areas and environmental improvements.
A public consultation event was held on July 5 and 6 2013. Potential problems raised included traffic impact, flood risk, the effect on local schools, affordable housing and the design of the estate.
Subsequently the site has been taken over by Barratt Homes, who are now going through the process of submitting detailed plans following the initial outline permission.

Your say: "The Mead housing plan is stupid. The (A350) is in poor repair and one of the busiest roads in the country. 220 house is about 300+ vehicles, 700-1000 people. The infrastructure is bursting now so can it cope with those sort of figures. To turn right out of house onto the (A350) is dicing with death and we have to go to the coop and turn around to come back. ... Time to use some common sense." MB, Westbury
