A Devizes woman was ordered to pay £400 in fines and costs for throwing litter out of her car window.

Laura Dunnill, of Flax Mill Park, was asked to pay a £75 penalty charge after Wiltshire Council officers witnessed her committing the offence. She was prosecuted after failing to respond.

Ms Dunnill failed to attend Swindon Magistrates Court and was convicted in her absence.

She was ordered to pay a £220 fine, costs of £150 and a £30 victim surcharge.

Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council's cabinet member for waste, said: "Our aim is to stop people dropping litter. It is unsightly and anti-social and if we can change people's behaviour it will improve our environment and reduce the money we spend on clearing litter. This outcome sends out a clear message that littering will not be tolerated."
