Recycling wood in Wiltshire
Wiltshire Wood Recycling is a 'not for profit' Community Interest Company, formed in 2006 to offer environmental and social benefits to the community of Wiltshire. They save wood waste from landfill and offer volunteering opportunities. The wood is largely collected from building sites and commercial premises which would otherwise be disposed of via skips into landfill. Where possible they use the wood to make products such as compost bins, garden planters, benches, bird tables and tea light holders. Some of the wood is sold in lengths to customers calling in to the site for their DIY projects, and some is cut down to be sold as kindling and firewood. Anything they are unable to use is taken to be chipped for garden use. The wood needs a lot of preparation to be ready for reuse and this is where volunteers come in.
WWR are based in Castle Coombe, and are able to offer opportunities to a range of volunteers including those with a support worker, retired folk wanting an interesting way to pass the day and younger people seeking work experience. They work with a number of local community groups such as Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and The Nature of It, and they are keen to hear from other groups with whom they could work.
