Sample's signs sort Salisbury streets
Residents in Belle Vue Road and Albany Road may see a decline in unsuitable HGVs getting stuck in their residential Victorian terraced streets.
Residents in the area contacted Cllr Paul Sample during the last County Council election campaign saying HGVs and longer delivery lorries were getting stuck in their narrow streets. While delivery vehicles, ambulance, fire and emergency trucks are welcome in the area, the problem was caused by long vehicles and HGVs getting lost - especially commercial vehicles. Once in the network of streets around Endless Street, Swaynes Close, Albany Road and Belle Vue Road, they cannot turn around and get out. The sharp corners and high volume of on-street parking led to vehicles getting stuck and damage being caused to parked vehicles as the lorries struggled to get out.
Cllr Sample took up the issue and worked with the County's Traffic Technician Paul Shaddock to come up with a solution. Now an additional Diverted Traffic sign and a new "Unsuitable for HGVs" sign have been installed. Cllr Sample said: "This problem has been a real niggle for local people. The installation of these signs is a welcome step forward. We'll have to watch what happens. The new signs may work or they may not - but it is worth a try.
"If we could just get lorries and HGVs to stop coming down Endless Street into this residential area in the first place, it would be a help. Having got down to the bottom of Endless Street, the last chance we have to turn them back is on the corner into Albany Road and Belle Vue Road. I'm now keeping my fingers crossed!"
