Schools can have 20mph limits

23 Mar 2016

Wiltshire Council has decreed that some schools could have advisory 20mph limits on roads going past the school gates. The limits would be in place only at the times when children are arriving at or leaving the school. Only schools which have an up to date school travel plan would be considered.

WC points out that the child KSI (killed and seriously injured) rates are low in the county, and injury accidents at schools are rare, so it wouldn't be value for money to put in 20mph around all schools. Advisory limits are cheaper to implement and don't need too much signage other than a flashing amber light which would be activated at the required times.

The council also says, "All schools in Wiltshire are encouraged to have a School Travel Plan (STP). Having a STP enables the schools to identify the travel needs of pupils and enables them to bid to the 'Taking Action on School Journeys' fund for measures both on the highway and within the school grounds that encourage both safe and sustainable travel choices. It is considered essential that the provision of 20 mph restrictions for school purposes be included as part of this process and that each application be treated on its own merits. A blanket approach to the use of advisory 20 mph restrictions outside schools is not recommended."
