Responding to the news that Ofwat is to be taken to court over sewage in English and Welsh rivers, Liberal Democrat Environment and Rural Affairs Spokesperson Tim Farron MP said:

"Water companies have been allowed to get away with dumping sewage for far too long and frankly the whole thing stinks.

"It's taken a court challenge of Ofwat to hold these Wild West water companies to account because the Conservative Government have sat on their hands and done nothing.

"Liberal Democrats are calling for a ban on sewage bonuses and a tax to help fund the clean up of rivers and beaches.

"For too long people have been affected by raw filthy sewage being pumped into our beautiful rivers and seas, it's time for this hideous act to end."

Sewage is discharged into our rivers daily, rivers are an integral part of our communities and ecosystems.
