'Six to Fix' - 1. Potholes, Paths and Pavements
Our roads are in a shocking state. Wiltshire Council is paying out a fortune to compensate motorists whose vehicles have been damaged by unrepaired potholes.
The Conservatives privatised the repair and maintenance of our roads. They hired a company on a five year contract and then had to sack them two years later!
An extra £860,000 has been granted to Wiltshire Council for road repairs. But too often low priority roads are getting fixed. We want to change that.
Liberal Democrats believe that the best decisions are those taken locally. Wiltshire Council has 18 Area Boards based in local communities made up of the Councillors elected to represent those communities, including the Councillor that represents you.
We want to give these Area Boards money and power to set priorities and get things done. Area Boards often also work closely with their area's Town and Parish Councils. When people work together they get more done. So we want to strengthen those links and ways of working.
Prioritising the repairs to local roads and pavements is an excellent example of this. Local people know where the worst potholes and broken pavements are.
Taking this approach will get the repairs done faster, where they are most needed the most and make the most efficient use of the extra money provided for this work.
