Speed limits in Fovant go up and down

The speed limit review carried out in 2009 by Wiltshire Council initially recommended that there be no change to the 40mph speed limit on the A30 through the village.

The parish council objected, saying there should be a 30mph limit. Although the number of houses on the main road wouldn't normally be enough, according to the WC rules, to permit a 30 zone, the presence of a number of 'key buildings' such as the garage and the Pembroke Arms tips the balance.

WC highways agreed to put in a short length of 30mph for 300metres around the bend, but with an increase in the limit from 40 to 50mph along the rest of the restricted length of road, with an extension of the 50 zone to cover the Fovant badges viewing area.

However following numerous objections to the proposal WC then decided to extend the proposed 30 mph speed limit by 80 metres eastward.

The approaches to the 30mph area will be highlighted with 'gateway' markings and signage to encourage drivers to slow down. Brook Street to the south of the A30 will also be covered by the new limit.

An objection to the increased limit on the approach to the village was dismissed by WC, so the limits will now be implemented as most recently advertised.
