Tories prioritise their travel expenses over communities
The Liberal Democrat amendment to prevent further cuts to the already decimated communities budget was voted down by the ruling Conservatives today in Trowbridge.
"We want to stop the proposed cuts in the communities budget. Building stronger and more resilient communities is vital for Wiltshire's future," said Lib Dem group leader Cllr Ian Thorn. The Lib Dem amendment to the budget proposed cutting Wiltshire Councillors travel expenses by a modest 20p and halving the budget for portfolio holders. This was felt to be a fair compromise as Cllr Thorn argued, "it's important that councillors take their fair share of pain at this challenging time. When jobs are at risk and services cut. Councillors must play their part."
"It is shameful that Tory councillors who continue to vote for the cutting of council budgets, reject the opportunity to cut their own expenses when presented with the opportunity," Ian continued, "this is a further example of an administration who deal in unfairness."
