Trowbridge Council supports Gap Road speed limit

3 Dec 2014

The Town Council's Development Committee has resolved to oppose Wiltshire Council's scheme to have high speed traffic on the Hilperton Relief Road, as well as on the new road at West Ashton. They decided:

That the council objects to the proposed differential speed limits along the route of the Hilperton Relief Road/Leap Gate/West Ashton Road Link and suggests that a 40mph speed limit throughout its length from Wyke Road to West Ashton Road should be applied. The approach to West Ashton Road section proposed to be 50mph is less than 600m long and changes in speed limit for such a short section are contrary to Dept of Transport recommendations. It has a footway/cycleway along its length, will have development on both sides and a public footpath crossing, additionally, to remove the requirement for additional speed limit boundary signs would be a cost saving. The Hilperton Relief Road has a footway/cycleway along its length, has a bridleway and three other well used public footpath crossings and therefore also is appropriate for a 40mph limit. In addition the lower limit will significantly reduce road noise and will have a positive impact on highway and pedestrian safety.
