WC loots reserves as budgets overspent

21 Sep 2013

A report to Wiltshire Council's Conservative cabinet for consideration on Tuesday September 24th shows a level of spending in excess of the budget. The worst-performing departments are Children's Social Care - overspent by £1,900,000 - and Learning Disability - overspent by £1,800,000. The council's redundancy programme is costing £4,100,000 more than planned in the current financial year, though there should of course be savings in the longer term.

A total of £4,800,000 is to be taken from the council's reserves. This will mean the general fund reserve will plummet from £12,640,000 at the start of the financial year to £7,840,000 at year end. Savings are also being made by delaying capital projects.
