Wiltshire Euro-election results

Here's the result as declared by Wiltshire Council. The numbers go towards the South West England and Gibraltar total, which resulted in 3 BPs, 2 LDs and one Green MEP.

The turnout for Wiltshire was 43.64% with 159,544 people voting in the Wiltshire Council area out of 365,628 eligible voters.

The breakdown in Wiltshire was as follows:

Dividing that into Euro-positives and -negatives we get:

Positives - Lib Dems, Greens, Small Change UK: - 70635

Negatives - Brexit, UKIP, Eng Nat, Cons: - 80442

So the leavers still have a majority in the county, though as is usual with Euro-elections the true majority is the non-voters.

Notes:

1. The innate strength of the Conservative Party in Wiltshire is shown by the fact that despite all the damage they've done to this country over the last four years - the cuts to education and local government, the rise in foodbanks and poverty, the stressing of the NHS and of the care system, the harm to trade and industry, the sheer bungling incompetence of the Brexit process - there are still nearly 18,000 people willing to vote for them!

2. Commentators always talk about 'the wishes of the electorate', as if we'd all got together beforehand to decide how to distribute our votes. All we have is the wishes of 159,544 individuals, each of whom has different reasons for voting how they did.

3. If you have a problem requiring you to contact one of your MEPs, don't waste time with the BP ones - approach the Lib Dem or Green representatives, who are more likely to be able to help.
